SENSELESS ACTS

OF VIOLENCE

WE LIVE in a violent world. The statistics tell us that someone is murdered across the United States every eleven seconds. I can’t remember a single instance as a boy where I heard that someone in my town or neighboring areas was the victim of murder, but now it is commonplace to hear about neighborhood violence, and a new generation of people live with the very real possibility that one or more of their friends or family members will be murdered by another. We also learn from media, political circles and big business that, for the most part, the loss of lives is a “necessary evil” where progress is concerned, and we have slowly accepted this, on some unconscious level, to be true. Ask yourself how many times you have sat idly while the news program told you that thousands were massacred in Bosnia, a bomb blast killed hundreds in Israel or scores of people perished at a compound in Waco, Texas. Unfortunately for media and politics, murder has lost its appeal with people until it hits home and we have a loved one who is brutalized or murdered.

Murder does not just end the life of the victim. In the taking of the life of a loved one the entire family in essence has been murdered. This is one circumstance that the hereafter will concede that to understand and come to terms with a loved one who is murdered could take a lifetime, if ever, to recover from. There are so many overlapping issues of loss of control over one’s life and vulnerability to strangers that it takes the very, very strong to understand that something will eventually be gained by this most cruel of lessons. The one thing I hear over and over from parents, spouses, siblings and friends of those who passed due to murder is what a senseless waste of a life was perpetrated by someone who can never really know how important was the life they destroyed to the ones who loved them. Nonetheless, the hereafter tells me that the taking of a life is a very complicated issue that has differing spiritual consequences for the murderer, the victim and the family.

I posed a question to the souls in the hereafter: If everyone in this existence has chosen their life here, who would decide to come back as a murderer? And what spiritual growth could possibly be gained by having life end so violently? Naturally we can only see from our own, rather myopic perspective here on the earth, and as much as I know from the souls in the hereafter about the Other Side, there are things that even I cannot know. Again it is a matter of faith that everything will become clear to us once our work here is done. But that does not help someone who is grieving over a senseless act of violence.

What I have learned from the hereafter is that while we choose the lessons in our soul
